On June 8, 2015, The International Olympic Committee confirmed the proposal of venue change, and assigned the Enoshima Yacht Harbor (Port of Shonan) as the new sailing venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Enoshima was the yachting venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Since then, Enoshima, being one of the best sailing venues in Japan, has played an important role in raising a number of excellent sailors. The sport was called ‘yachting’ in those days, but its name was changed to ‘sailing’ from the time of 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney on.

A number of races and practices take place around this sea area.
Fujisawa City would like to give a hearty welcome to the sports officials and federations who are looking for the location of pre-Games training camps.
Please refere to our 'Guide for Pre-Camp Training Camps' for detail.
In the sailing events, athletes sail on a small boat and race around a course marked by buoys in a specific order for a specified number of times. The winners are decided according to their total combined number of points and the final ranking.
Several different classes, such as ‘Laser’ (maneuvered by one sailor) and ‘49er’ (maneuvered by two sailors) will race in the events. Windsurfing has also been one of the Olympic sailing events since the 1984 Los Angels Olympics.
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the event programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on June 9th, 2017, in Lausanne, Switzerland.
As for sailing, 10 events are confirmed, as they were in the Rio 2016 Games.

(The following is a message from Mayor Suzuki upon hosting the sailing events for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics)
"I am very honored and delighted that Enoshima was chosen as the sailing venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, following the previous ones in 1964. It brings me back the memories and excitements of the past Games, and I feel my heart filled with high hopes.
The year of 2020 is also the city’s 80th anniversary of becoming a municipal government. I hope that many of the citizens will participate in various phases of the preparations of the Games by integrating and enhancing each one’s power. Let us welcome the athletes and guests who will be visiting our city during the Games with hospitality!"
Tsuneo Suzuki, Mayor of Fujisawa City
