Mayor of Fujisawa City Yasunori Ebine
The city of Fujisawa locates 50km away from Tokyo, the heart of Japan, and that is the place where people enjoy mild climate and comfortable lives. Enoshima Island, often appears as one of the popular scenic areas in Ukiyoe, (the woodprints flourished in the Edo period), is the symbol of the city. You cannot find any other beautiful view than the one like Shonan Shore and Mt. Fuji from Enoshima Benten Bridge in the world and that is the pride of Fujisawa. In addition to the landscape and scenery, lots of temples and shrines that are significant in the Japanese history locate in the city. One of such temples called Yugyoji is important to believers in the Jisyu sect of Buddhism because it is the head temple of the sect. Therefore, if you visit Fujisawa you might be able to find historical and cultural aspects of Japan.
Fujisawa was municipalized on October 1, 1940, with the population of approximately 36,000, and in April 2007, it has grown up as a city with population of more than 400,000. In recent years, it is described as a city for tourists, residents, commercial and industrial businesses, moreover, it is considered as an academic city since there are four universities within it. Fujisawa continues to develop as the city that has well-balanced urban function. Along with the “Fujisawa Comprehensive Plans 2020”, I promise and am going to work for sound growth of children, pursue safety and security in the city, build the society that can coexist with nature, make the industry attractive, promote sound fiscal policy and administrative reform and so on.
In order to realize our ideal society, “Shonan Fujisawa where you would long to build a lifetime home”, the city of Fujisawa will always take its citizen’s point of view, and keep sending its messages domestically and globally as well.
I hope many of you will have opportunity to feel the balmy breeze of Shonan!
