Artist statement
Clear thin plastic sheet. By running it all around from the ceiling to the floor and stapling and taping it, I wrap and divide the space up. If left partially open, that is a doorway. The ventilation duct connects the inside of the sheets and the outside of the window. Those who paint indoors would have experience of making such instant booth.
The temporary construction of a creative site. Turning a space momentarily into a studio. The booth turns spaces that may have little to do with creation such as offices, classrooms, shops and homes into creative spaces. When it expands and fills the location, there are alleyway-like gaps between the sheets and the walls. The original place becomes the back space. The inside of the booth and the outside of the building are directly connected.
Ultimately, it gets dismantled and the materials are disposed of. A new booth is constructed somewhere else again by gathering up the available materials at hand. Like a nomad who does not settle but moves from place to place living in a tent, or like a traveler who unpacks a bag and sets himself up at a lodge, a mobile artist creates and then erases the temporary border of his creative zone across various non-studio places; it is a workplace with mobility.
The booth is not only for dividing space. Sometimes, I’m tempted to turn the jet away and test-spray onto the sheets. A spray can fits in one hand, giving me more mobility than the one with large air compressor on the floor. It makes me stretch out a bit more and scribble on the sheets or the floor. As this continues, the booth itself begins to take on the appearance of a creative object.
The duct hums. The booth shrinks and expands. The scribble swings. The sheets fold. Like the pressure of the spray can sprays the paint, the air flow of the duct carries the paint particles outside the booth, outside the building. The air circulates just like the blood. The booth is like an organ in metabolism. Creativity of the site seeps out of the sheets and spreads gently.
The word aerosol refers to the misty paint, emphasizing the material’s condition. On the other hand, the word spray emphasizes the gesture of writing/spraying, withholding the writer’s subjectivity. In this exhibition, I aim to express the mobility of spray and painting, the expansion of aerosol and space, the temporary construction of the booth and the site, and the whole process in the form of an installation through the residency.
